The Dow Jones Industrials Average started out the trading week at 10,330.10 and moved to a low at 10,329.80 before ending the week on the upside. The index has been on a huge run since March of this year. The Dow is currently above all of its major moving averages but below the 200 week moving average at 11,187.42. The index also broke above upside resistance in the 10,139.00 area after 6 weeks of tight price closes. The top movers in the Dow 30 this week were (DD) DuPont up 3.92%, (AA) Alcoa up 3.88%, (STX) Seagate Technology up 2.21%, (KFT) Kraft Food up 2.11% and (T) AT&T up 2.03%. The Dow Industrials ended the week trading at 10,520.10 up +191.21 or 1.85% on the upside on lighter than average upside volume of 1.87 billion volume. The average weekly trading volume for the index is 5.06 billion.
At the Nasdaq Composite Index there was also a move to the upside in the tech weighed index. The index has been on a huge run up since March as it also made a move higher during the holiday shortened week. The tech weighed index began the week trading at 2,224.04 before ending the week trading much higher. The Nasdaq advanced breaking above its 200 week moving average for the first time since September of 2007. The index is now above its 5, 10, 32, 50 and 200 week moving averages. The move above the 200 week moving average is a bullish sign going forward. The top movers in the Nasdaq 100 were (ERTS) Electronic Arts up 6.64%, (SHLD) Sears Holdings up 6.58%, (ILMN) Illumina 6.28%, (HOLX) Hologic up 5.76% and (AAPL) Apple up 5.45%. The Nasdaq ended the week trading at 2,285.69 +74.00 +3.35% on lighter than average trading volume of 5.74 billion. The average weekly trading volume for the Nasdaq is 10.44 billion.
As for the Standard and Poors 500 there was also a move to the upside as the index advanced higher. The S&P 500 is above its 5, 10, 32, and 50 week moving averages but below the 200 week at 1,237.42. The index started out the week trading at 1,105.31 but moved slightly lower to the 1,105.31 area before ending the week trading much higher. The top movers in the S&P 500 this week were (MBI) MBIA up 18.96%, (JBL) Jabil Circuit up 15.98%, (SNDK) Sandisk Corp. up 13.14%, (NYT) New York Times Co. up 12.70% and (GCI) Gannett up 11.40%. The index closed the week to end trading at 1,126.48 up +24.01 or +2.18% higher on lighter than average upside volume of 9.80 billion. The average weekly trading volume for the S&P 500 is 20.83 billion.
